Curly Hair Method - What the internet does not tell you

With curly/wavy hair care picking up in the market, everyone is talking about it and bloggers, influencers, brands and stylists are pushing it out there. As a buyer it is important to identify who or what is coming from a ‘sales' perspective and who is coming from genuine care. Many-a-time, even unpaid or genuine reviews are still “intended” to drive sales instead of spreading awareness.

Curl Up And Dye has and will always be committed to educating our clientele openly and honestly about hair care and the realities of it. In this blog we’ll explore a few issues or pain points that arise from switching to a curly routine and how one can tackle them, or accept them and move on.

1 -  Issues from keeping the hair wet / letting it air dry:

Letting the curl cream absorb into the hair with water is the most important step of your routine, but what could go wrong? Most commonly, people get colds and headaches from leaving their hair wet for a longer duration. Some people with high density hair may experience scalp issues from the air not entering the scalp and being moist for too long. In such cases, towel-drying well / diffusing around the scalp as required helps.

2 -  Skin or scalp related issues from product not suiting you:

Your hair is attached to your scalp and your scalp extends to become your skin i.e, face, neck, back, etc. Sometimes products may not suit you and react adversely with one or more parts but you will still see results.

One example is that a lot of curlies use heavy oil based curl creams on dry hair, the hair curls well and stays, but you may see breakouts due to scalp deposits, sensitivity, flaking, body acne, dry skin, hair fall, etc. Do patch tests before fully trusting a product on your entire scalp. Stay observant on the reactivity of your scalp to the products and change 1-2 products to understand which one may be causing the issues. Ensure that you switch the products out, and don't continue just to “use up what’s been bought”.

3 -  Issues from strong fragrances of the products:

A lot of curly hair products are made to smell strongly nice. While a lot of people appreciate the fragrances or even look for them in a product, many people are bothered by it. It can be anywhere from just being uncomfortable to you not liking it to getting headaches and a stinging sensation in the eyes, heavy unsettled feeling in the nasal tract, etc.

In such cases please go for very lightly scented products for stylers and choose as many products to be fragrance free as possible.

4 - Issues from bending neck over and styling upside down while styling:

The most common and widely advised way to do your curly routine is to bend your head forward and extend the neck. This can be highly straining for your neck and back depending on the weight and density of the hair and how long you stay in this position.

Arm and shoulder strains that come from having to work your hair in these awkward positions also arise.

Please make sure to do whatever works for you. Change positions or style most of your hair with your head up. Do only the crown part with the head down for volume, take breaks to stretch and relax etc. Remember, every step of the routine is not a one-size-fits-all.

These are a few common and broad spectrum problems that we have addressed here, but specific cases can vary vastly from person to person.
